What Gary is, and what Gary can be

Reverend Dr. Dexter Harris has pastored in Gary since 2014, and what comes to mind when he says he's from here is: "Magic city, chocolate city, rich history, community, passion, and greatness." For the families in his congregation, the mill meant "an opportunity. A way out of the struggle," toward building wealth, pursuing education, and gaining healthcare.

What makes him hopeful is "the willingness of the people of Gary to collaborate, to make a better future.” He highlighted a recent Saturday when several churches, side by side, rebuilt four vacant lots at once. "That reminds me of what Gary is and what Gary can be.”
