Gary has so many pockets of kindness.

Born and raised in Gary, Lori Gonzalez Turner has spent nearly her entire life in Northwest Indiana. Steel has always been part of her family’s story: her grandparents, uncles, father, husband, and even Lori herself have worked in the mills.

That connection makes worker safety deeply personal. “I want my husband, and every worker, to come home healthy and safe,” she says. Still, Lori finds hope in Gary’s resilience.

After the recent disaster, neighbors came together to clear streets for emergency vehicles. “People may see Gary as falling apart, but I see something different — so many beautiful pockets of kindness throughout this community.”
