Shelonda Manning, Materials Manager, U.S. Steel Gary Works

The mills is work. Gary is home.

Shelonda has spent nearly 27 years at U.S. Steel, starting as a crane operator before moving into management. Born and raised in Gary, she still lives in the city.

“When I travel and people ask me where I’m from, I’m proud to say Gary is where I’m from.”

For Shelonda, the mill meant a job and stability. To her, the mill is a job provider, not a civic partner. Her hope for Gary doesn’t run through the mill. It runs through the people who call it home.

“The future of Gary begins with us. People who live in Gary. People who want to see a change.”
